...The classic, proper horror film after Psycho was probably the Soviet film The Curse of the Vampire (1967), co-directed by Konstantin Elkhov and Georgiou Kropachev and adapted from Gogol's original story (Vii, one of the stories in Folktales). In the 1970s, William Friedkin's The Exorcist (1973) appeared. The success of this film, which depicts a spectacular showdown between a demon possessing a young girl and an exorcist priest, elevated the impression of traditional horror films as low-budget gags to that of a first-class blockbuster film directed by an Academy Award-winning director, and set the precedent for a series of God vs. the Devil films (the precursor to this was Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby (1968)), and established the term occult in Japan. ...
