Kishiha

Japanese:
Kishiha

A school of painting from the late Edo period through the Meiji period. Its founder, Kishi Ganku (died 1839), was known for his expressive style of painting, and formed a major force in the Kyoto art world with many disciples, including his eldest son, Kishi Ganku (1782-1866), Kawamura Bunpo, Yokoyama Kazan, and Shirai Kayo, author of Gajo Yoraku. Kishi Ganku's adopted son, Kishi Renzan (1804-1859), transformed the school's distinctive style by incorporating the Shijo school's style, and Kishi Chikudo (1826-1897), who studied under him and later became his adopted son, painted not only tigers and birds and animals, the school's speciality, but also realistic landscapes incorporating Western-style shading and perspective. The Kishi school essentially ended with Takedo, but he played an important role in the Kyoto art world of the Meiji period alongside Kansai Mori and Bairei Kono. Tamagawa Mochizuki of the Mochizuki school also studied under Kishi, and his style was a fusion of the Shijo and Kishi schools.
