〘Noun〙① Upper lip. [Anatomy New Book (1774)]② Part of an insect's mouthparts. A small, plate-like piece that protrudes downward from the head wall and covers the mandible from the front. It is well developed in species with biting-type mouthparts. [Vocabulary of Biology (1884)]③ When the lip of a flower such as an orchid can be distinguished into two parts by a constriction or other means, this refers to the upper part.
