Quadrant

Also known as a quadrant. An astronomical instrument used to measure the altitude of celestial bodies. It has a quarter-circumference scale graduated from 0° to 90°, and a sighting ruler is attached to it, passing through the center of the circle. The quadrant used by Tycho Brahe had a radius of 3 m. 象限儀とも。天体の高度を観測するのに用いられた天文観測機器の一つ。円周の４分の１の目盛環に０°から90°まで目盛ったもので，これに円の中心を通る視準尺が取り付けてある。ティコ・ブラーエが観測に使った四分儀は円の半径が3mもあった。
