[Died] June 24, 1989. Tokyo Singer and actress. Real name Kazue Kato. Singing at local theaters since she was a child, she made her debut at the Yokohama International Theater in 1948. In August 1949, she appeared in the film "Odoru Ryugujo" (Dancing Dragon Palace) and made her record debut with the theme song "Kappa Boogie Woogie". In September, she made her first starring role in the film "Sad Whistle", which depicted a girl surviving the chaos following World War II and became a huge hit along with the theme song of the same name. After that, she signed an exclusive contract with Nippon Columbia Records and released one hit after another, while also forming a trio with Izumi Yukimura and Chiemi Eri. After a period of misfortune, such as having hydrochloric acid thrown at her by an enthusiastic fan, she became known as the "Queen of the Pop Music World". Her signature songs include "Ringo Oiwake", "Yawara (1965 Japan Record Award winner)" and "Kanashii Sake", and her total work totals more than 1,000 songs. She was the first woman to be awarded the People's Honour Award posthumously.

歌手,女優。本名加藤和枝。子供の頃から地方劇場をまわって歌い,1948年横浜国際劇場に進出。翌 49年8月映画『踊る竜宮城』に出演し,その主題歌『河童ブギウギ』でレコード・デビューを果す。9月に初主演した映画『悲しき口笛』は,第2次世界大戦後の混乱を生抜く少女を描いて同名の主題歌とともに大ヒットした。以後日本コロムビア・レコードと専属契約を結び,次々とヒット曲を出す一方,雪村いづみ,江利チエミとトリオを組んで活躍。その後,熱狂的なファンに塩酸をかけられるなど,不運の時期を経て,「歌謡界の女王」と称される存在となった。代表曲『リンゴ追分』『柔 (やわら,1965年日本レコード大賞受賞) 』『悲しい酒』などをはじめ,全作品は 1000曲以上に及ぶ。没後,女性初の国民栄誉賞が贈られた。
