A deciduous tree of the Betulaceae family (APG classification: Betulaceae) that grows to a height of over 15 meters. The bark is smooth and grayish white, while young branches are red. The leaves are 3-7 cm long with 10-15 pairs of lateral veins, red when young and with fine duplicative serrations on the edges. It is monoecious and blooms at the same time as the buds open in spring. The fruit spikes are 4-10 cm long and the bracts are somewhat sparse. The base of the bracts of the fruit spikes contains a broad nut the size of a grain of rice. It is distributed from southern Hokkaido to Kyushu, and is commonly found in mountain forests. The wood is used for alcove pillars, umbrella handles, geta (wooden clogs), and spun wood pipes. The name comes from the fact that the new leaves are red and the fruit spikes resemble shide (paper used to attach to shimenawa ropes, etc.).
