Wang Chen-er

Japanese:
Wang Chen-er

A Baekje immigrant in the late 6th century. He was a member of the Fumihito (Historical Section) who belonged to the Imperial Court and was tasked with writing and recording, and is the ancestor of the Funanofuhito (Ship History). According to the Nihon Shoki, he was appointed as a ship's captain and given the surname Funanofuhito for his achievement in recording and counting the ship's tax during the reign of Emperor Kinmei. In 572 (the 1st year of Emperor Bidatsu's reign), he deciphered a Goguryeo official document that no one else could read, and was praised by the Emperor and his minister, Soga no Umako. The "Funanogo Tomb Inscription" from the "Bojin Year" (668, the 7th year of Emperor Tenchi's reign) gives his name as O Chihito, making him the grandfather of Funanofuhito. His brother Ushi is said to be the ancestor of Tsushi, and his nephew Itsu is said to be the ancestor of Shiraishi, and the Shoku Nihongi states that the Fune, Tsu, and Shiraishi clans are descendants of King Shinson, the grandson of King Kisu of Baekje. These three clans are a branch of the Fumihito clan, based in Nonaka-go, Tajihi County, Kawachi Province (present-day Habikino City, Osaka Prefecture), and produced many talented writers, scholars, and diplomats up until the Nara and Heian periods. The story of King Tatsuji in the Nihon Shoki is likely a legend about the founder that was created based on the characteristics of the Fune clan.
