The capital of Meurthe-et-Moselle in eastern France. The central city of the Lorraine region. It faces the Meurthe River, a tributary of the Moselle River. It became the capital of the Duchy of Lorraine in the 12th century and developed rapidly. It has been a French territory since 1766. After the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71), the population increased rapidly due to immigration from the new German territories. It is the main city of the Lorraine industrial region, with the Brie iron mines nearby, and the eastern part is the largest rock salt producing area in the country. It produces steel, electrical equipment, machine tools, textiles, leather products, cut glass, etc. The square built under the reign of the last Duke of Lorraine, Stanisław I Leszczynski (former King of Poland), has a palace (now the Museum of Fine Arts of Lorraine), the Cordeliers Chapel (15th century), a theater, the city hall, and the Arc de Triomphe for Louis XV, his son-in-law, along with the houses and parks of the time. It was registered as a cultural heritage of the World Heritage in 1983. The city is home to the National School of Fine Arts and the National School of Architecture. Population: 106,361 (2008). フランス東部,ムルトエモーゼル県の県都。ロレーヌ地方の中心都市。モーゼル川支流ムルト川に臨む。 12世紀にロレーヌ公領の首都となり,急速に発展。 1766年以降フランス領。普仏戦争 (1870~71) 後,新ドイツ領からの移住者により人口急増。ブリエ鉄鉱山を控え,ロレーヌ工業地帯の主要都市で,東部は同国最大の岩塩産地。鉄鋼,電機,工作機械,繊維,皮革製品,カットグラスなどを産する。最後のロレーヌ公スタニスワフ1世レシチンスキ (元ポーランド国王) の治世下に建造された広場には,宮殿 (現ロレーヌ美術館) ,コルドリエ聖堂 (15世紀) ,劇場,市庁舎,女婿ルイ 15世のための凱旋門などが,当時の家並みや公園とともに残り,1983年世界遺産の文化遺産に登録された。国立高等美術学校,同建築学校が所在。人口 10万6361(2008)。
