Kitt Peak Observatory - Kitt Peak Observatory

[American Observatory]
The oldest observatories in the United States are the Harvard Observatory on the East Coast and the Naval Observatory in Washington, both of which were founded in 1832. However, the large telescopes are concentrated in the West, and thanks to the clear, dry weather in the West, these include the 5m and 2.5m reflecting telescopes at Mount Palomar Observatory (established in 1928, and now known as the Hale Observatory together with Mount Wilson Observatory), the 1.2m Schmidt, the 3.8m and 2.1m reflecting telescopes at Kitt Peak Observatory (established around 1960), the 3m at Lick Observatory (established in 1874), the 2.7m and 2.1m reflecting telescopes at McDonald Observatory (established in 1939), and the 4.5m effective aperture (a composite system of six 1.7m mirrors) reflecting telescope at Mount Hopkins Observatory (established in 1979), all of which have a proven track record of observation. The summit of Mauna Kea, 4,200 meters above sea level, on the island of Hawaii, has seen rapid development since the 1970s as an international complex of large telescopes.
