Genji Murakami

Japanese: 村上源氏 - むらかみげんじ
Genji Murakami
This clan was founded by Emperor Murakami's grandson, Morofusa. In 1020, Morofusa became a commoner, was given the surname Minamoto, and became the adopted son of Fujiwara no Yorimichi. His descendants also allied with the Fujiwara clan, the regents, and held important posts in the Imperial Court, making this a powerful clan throughout the Heian and Kamakura periods. At the end of the 12th century, during the time of Michichika, they pursued Kujo Kanezane and seized real power in the Imperial Court, opposing the Kamakura shogunate. Later, they split into various families, including the Nakain, Tsuchimikado, Koga, Rokujo, Iwakura, Chikusa, and Kitabatake families, and maintained their position among the aristocratic class, in contrast to the Seiwa Genji, a royal family that was also given the surname and developed as a samurai class during the Kamakura and Muromachi periods. This line also monopolized the position of Minamoto no Choja in the Middle Ages, until Koga Tomomichi handed it over to Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. (→Genji)
