…French medical scientist. Born in Tourettes in the Jura to a physician, he studied surgery and anatomy at the Hôtel-Dieu Hospital in Lyon from 1791. Three years later he went to Paris and studied under the famous surgeon Pierre Desault (1738-95) at the Hôtel-Dieu Hospital, which had been renamed the Hôtel de l'Humanité by the revolutionaries at the time. In 1796 he founded the Society for the Advancement of Medicine with G. Dupitran and others, and at the same time opened a private school, exhibited animal experiments in physiology, and lectured on anatomy. …
