(1) Usually refers to the integer part of a common logarithm. The decimal part of a common logarithm is the mantissa. The index can be 0 or a positive or negative integer value, and the mantissa is always expressed as a positive decimal less than 1. The index of the logarithm of a number whose integer part of an exact number has n digits is n - 1, and if the exact number is a decimal and a non-zero number appears in the nth place after the decimal point for the first time, the index of the logarithm is - n (written as ). Regarding the mantissa, the mantissas of numbers that have the same arrangement of digits and differ only in the position of the decimal point are all equal. The term characteristic is also used.

(1) 普通は常用対数の整数部分をいう。常用対数の小数部分は仮数である。指標は 0あるいは正，負の整数値をとり，仮数は常に 1より小さい正の小数で表される。真数の整数部分が n桁の数の対数の指標は n－1 であり，また真数が小数で，その小数の小数点以下第n位に初めて 0でない数が現れるならば，その対数の指標は－n（と書く）である。また仮数については，数字の並び方が同じで，小数点の位置だけが異なる数の仮数はみな等しい。標数という語も使われる。
(2) ノモグラフ（計算図表）において，t を媒介変数とする連立方程式を，x₁＝m₁f₁（t），x₂＝m₂f₂（t）（m₁，m₂ は定数）とし，これをグラフに書くとき，t の値を曲線上に目盛ったものを曲線関数尺といい，この t を指標ということがある。
