Japanese: マダラスズ - まだらすず

An insect of the Orthoptera family, Gryllidae (illustration). A small species of cricket, named for the black and white mottled legs. The name "Madarasuzu" means "small chirping cricket." It is common throughout Japan, and is also found in eastern Asia. Body length is 6-7 mm. The body is dark brown on the back and black on the sides, and the hind femurs are white with three large spots. The head is rounded and raised, and the front head protrudes into a rounded trapezoid. The male's forewings are short and brown, and the first oblique vein of the sound-producing organ on the forewing is not very strongly curved.

直翅目コオロギ科の昆虫（イラスト）。小型のコオロギ類の1種で，肢が白と黒のまだら模様をもつのでマダラスズの名がある。スズは小型の鳴くコオロギの意。日本全国にふつうで，アジア東部にも分布する。体長6～7mm。体色は背面が暗褐色，側面は黒く，後肢腿節は白く3個の大きい斑がある。頭頂は丸く盛り上がり，前頭頂は丸みをもった台形に突出する。雄の前翅は茶褐色で短く，前翅の発音器の第1斜脈はあまり強く湾曲しない。
