An aromatic nitro compound. There are two isomers, 1- (or α-) and 2- (or β-) nitronaphthalene, depending on the position of the nitro group. When naphthalene is nitrated with mixed acid (a mixture of concentrated sulfuric acid and concentrated nitric acid), the 1- and 2- isomers are produced in a ratio of 9 to 1. (Chemical formula) The 1- isomer is a yellow needle-like crystal with a melting point of 61 °C and a boiling point of 304 °C. It becomes 1-naphthylamine when reduced, so it is an important dye raw material. The 2- isomer is a colorless plate-like crystal with a melting point of 79 °C and a boiling point of 312.5 °C (734.4 mmHg). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
