Earmark - Jihyo

A tag attached to the ear of a livestock animal for individual identification. It is used for sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, and other animals whose coats cannot be distinguished by color or other factors. Traditionally, ear cutting or tattooing was used, but nowadays earrings are used, with aluminum tags attached, and animals are strictly identified by symbols and numbers. 家畜の耳につけられる個体識別のための標識。毛色などで個体を区別できない羊ややぎ，豚，うさぎなどに用いる。耳に切り目をつける截耳 (せつじ) や入墨が古来行われていたが，現在はアルミニウムなどの標識をつける耳環法が一般に行われ，記号，数字によって厳密に識別されている。
