…Throughout this time, he continued his literary career in parallel with his public life, writing more than 50 short stories and numerous poems. In his early short stories, such as Lake Immen (1850, translated into Japanese as Lake), he mainly used a flashback style, lyrically describing scenes of past happiness, creating a sense of impermanence, but from the 1970s onwards, he dealt with tragic human fates in powerful writing. In his chronicles such as The Drowning (1876), he often portrayed the tragedies of common people caused by the inhumanity of local aristocrats, and in his family stories such as Karsten the Guardian (1878), he traced the inevitable process by which love and hate between family members, such as father and son, produce tragedy. …
