[Birth] Around 1490 Kayseri Died: July 17, 1588. A leading architect of the Ottoman Empire in Constantinople. He was active under Suleiman I and Selim II. He is said to have designed approximately 360 buildings, including 79 mosques and 34 palaces. For his mosques, he modeled his work on the Hagia Sophia, a representative example of 6th-century Byzantine architecture, and created unique spaces with large domes and their supporting structures. His major works include the Şehzade Mosque in Istanbul (1543-48), the Suleiman Mosque (1550-57), and the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne (1569-75).
