Ototake Iwazo

Educator. Born in Mie Prefecture. Graduated from Tokyo Higher Normal School in 1899 (Meiji 32), he immediately became assistant professor and instructor at the higher normal school. During this time, he drafted elementary school ethics books with Hiraide Kojiro (1869-1911) and Yoshida Kumaji, and compiled national textbooks for ethics and Japanese language with Haga Yaichi. He also published "Outline of Elementary School Teaching Training." In 1903 (Meiji 36), he became a professor at the higher normal school. In the same year, he went on a business trip overseas and studied at universities in Berlin, Jena, Leipzig, Paris, and Cambridge. After returning to Japan, he served as a school inspector for the Ministry of Education for a time, but in 1908 he became a full-time teacher at the higher normal school. He wrote "Experimental Education" and "New Teaching Methods," among others, and during the Taisho era, he studied Kerschensteiner and cultural pedagogy. His greatest achievement was the three-volume "History of Education for the Common People in Japan" published in 1929 (Showa 4).

教育家。三重県に生まれる。1899年(明治32)東京高等師範学校を卒業、ただちに高師助教兼訓導となる。この時期、平出鏗二郎(こうじろう)(1869―1911)、吉田熊次らと小学校修身書を起草、あるいは芳賀矢一(はがやいち)らと修身、国語の国定教科書を編纂(へんさん)する。また『小学校教授訓練提要』を公刊。1903年(明治36)高師教授に就任。同年海外に出張し、ベルリン、イエナ、ライプツィヒ、パリ、ケンブリッジの各大学で学ぶ。帰国後、一時文部省視学官を兼任したが、1908年高師専任。『実験教育学』『新教授法』などを書き、大正年間にはケルシェンシュタイナー、文化教育学を研究。最大の業績は1929年(昭和4)の『日本庶民教育史』3巻である。
