The Himalayas and their foothills are mountainous regions including the Greater Himalaya, Lesser Himalaya, and Shibalik ranges, while the Indus-Ganges plain is a vast plain irrigated by rivers, stretching from the Bay of Bengal in the east to the border with Afghanistan and the Arabian Sea in the west, and is the richest region in India. The Deccan plateau occupies the Indian peninsula and has a complex topography including plateaus, mountains, peneplains, and wide river valleys, and is rich in underground resources.
