Owari Shippo

Japanese: 尾張七宝 - おわりしっぽう

A regional brand of the Tokai region, Aichi prefecture.
It is produced in Shippo-cho, Kaifu County, Nagoya City, and Kiyosu City. It is said to have originated during the Tenpo era (1830-1844) in the late Edo period, when Kaji Tsunekichi of Owari discovered the manufacturing method after coming across a Dutch cloisonné plate and made improvements to it. Wired cloisonné, in which silver is applied to the outline of the design, is a representative technique of Owari cloisonné. Current products include vases, sake vessels, pendants, and more. In April 1995, it was designated a traditional craft of Japan by the Minister of International Trade and Industry (currently the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry).

海部郡七宝町・名古屋市・清須市で製作されている。江戸時代後期の天保年間(1830年〜1844年)、尾張の梶常吉がオランダ七宝の皿を手がかりにその製法を発見し、改良を加えたのが始まりという。図柄の輪郭になる部分に銀腺をほどこす有線七宝は尾張七宝の代表的な技術である。現在の製品には、花瓶・酒器・ペンダントなどがある。1995(平成7)年4月、通商産業大臣(現・経済産業大臣)によって国の伝統的工芸品に指定。
