Pottery made in Kozuke, Buzen Province (Kozuke, Fukuchi Town, Fukuoka Prefecture). The kiln was first opened in 1602 (Keicho 7) after the Hosokawa family was granted the fief of Kokura in Buzen Province. It is said to have been built by Sonkai, who came from the Korean Peninsula, and became the official kiln for the Kokura Domain in Buzen Province. Full-scale pottery production began in the mid-Keicho period (1596-1615) with the Kamanokuchi Kiln (Hotta, Kozuke, Fukuchi Town) by Agano Kizo. In addition, the Sarayama Kiln (Main Kiln) and the Iwatani Kiln (Tojin Kiln) were also opened, and these three kilns are known as the Kozuke Ancient Kilns and are considered to be among the Seven Kilns of Enshu. His early style was similar to Takatori ware, and he produced everyday dishes and tea utensils using ash glaze, feldspar glaze, and black glaze. After the Hosokawa family was transferred to Kumamoto, Sarayama Kiln became the official kiln for the feudal lord Ogasawara family, and Ueno Kizo moved to Kumamoto with the Hosokawa family and is said to have started Yatsushiro ware.
