1865‐1943 Jewish thinker. Born in Vitebsk, Russia, he settled in New York after 1908. He was passionate about reviving the Yiddish language and was a theoretical leader of socialist territorial nationalism of the Jewish diaspora. He wrote books such as Why Yiddish (1900) and The Development of Philosophy (1910), and was active in a wide range of fields, including lecturing, contributing articles, and organizational activities. In 1915, he joined the staff of the New York Yiddish daily newspaper The Day, where he discussed Kant, Faust, Job, and Einstein, and translated Nietzsche's Zarathustra into Yiddish.
