A perennial herb of the grass family that produces a fragrant fragrance. It is also called citronella. Native to tropical Asia. It grows to a height of about 2m and resembles Miscanthus sinensis. Its leaves are 90cm long and 2cm wide, and give off a fragrant scent when cut. For this reason, it is also called the common citronella. It is mainly grown in Sri Lanka, but is also cultivated in Java and the Malay Peninsula. It is propagated by division. Citronella oil is extracted from the leaves by steam distillation.
