Citronella grass

Japanese: シトロネラソウ（英語表記）citronella grass

A perennial herb of the grass family that produces a fragrant fragrance. It is also called citronella. Native to tropical Asia. It grows to a height of about 2m and resembles Miscanthus sinensis. Its leaves are 90cm long and 2cm wide, and give off a fragrant scent when cut. For this reason, it is also called the common citronella. It is mainly grown in Sri Lanka, but is also cultivated in Java and the Malay Peninsula. It is propagated by division. Citronella oil is extracted from the leaves by steam distillation. The essential oil contains d -citronellal (24-34%), geraniol (26-40%), and l -borneol.

香料をとるイネ科の多年草。シトロネラともいう。熱帯アジアの原産。高さ約2mでススキに似る。葉は長さ90cm，幅2cmほどで，切れば芳香が出る。そのためコウスイガヤとも呼ばれる。スリランカが主産地で，ジャワおよびマレー半島にも栽培がある。繁殖は株分けによる。葉を水蒸気蒸留してシトロネラ油をとる。精油の成分はd‐シトロネラール(24～34％)，ゲラニオール(26～40％)で，ほかにl‐ボルネオールなどを含む。
