Since ancient times, it has developed as a post station on the Tokaido and an outer port of Sunpu. It prospered as a base for the navy (Funategumi) and as a shipping hub for rice shipped from Koshu. Currently, it is a port and industrial area centered on Shimizu Port. There are many tourist spots such as Nihon-daira and Miho no Matsubara. [Glossary] (Regarding (1)) (1) In waka poetry, in the past, it was often used as a utamakura (pillow poem) such as "Nonaka no Shimizu" (Clear water in the plains) or "Oborono Shimizu" (Clear water at the Osaka Barrier) was a poem about "love" or "journey". In the "Horikawa Hyakushu" (One Hundred Poems), the theme "spring" was added to the 15 summer poems, and it came to evoke coolness in the "summer" when it was written as "In June, the springs that grow on the rocks do not form a knot, have they forgotten the winds of Afugi? (Fujiwara no Kinzane)".
(2) The "Horikawa Hyakushu" had a great influence on subsequent poets. In particular, the poem by Saigyo in the "Shin Kokinshu" was widely known and was even included in Noh plays. In "Oku no Hosomichi," Basho stops by the remaining willow tree.
(3) In haiku poetry, the seasonal word for "summer" is "Shimizu musubi" or "Shimizu sekku," and "Shimizu" is considered "miscellaneous." However, in the mid-Edo period "Haikai: Humorous Chat - June," "Shimizu" alone is considered "summer."
