[1] 〘名〙清らかなわき水。清らかに澄んだ水。すみず。《季・夏》※書紀（720）神代下（鴨脚本訓）「門の前に一つの好井(シミツ)有り」※新古今（1205）夏「道の辺に清水流るる柳蔭しばしとてこそ立ちどまりつれ〈西行〉」[2][一] 狂言。各流。茶の湯の水をくみにやらされた太郎冠者が、鬼が出たといって途中で逃げて来る。落として来た手桶(ておけ)が惜しいと主が清水に行くと、太郎冠者が鬼の面をかぶって現われておどすが、声に不審を抱いた主に面を取られて逃げるという筋。「天正狂言本」で「野中の清水」、「狂言記」で「鬼清水」。[二] 静岡市の行政区の一つ。古代から東海道の宿駅、駿府の外港として発達。江戸時代は江尻、興津が東海道五十三次の宿駅となり、廻船問屋四二軒が免許され、水軍（船手組）の基地、甲州廻米の積出しで栄えた。現在は清水港を中心とする港湾・工業地区。日本平、三保松原など、観光地も多い。[語誌]((一)について) (1)和歌では、古くは「野中の清水」「おぼろの清水」など歌枕として詠まれることが多く、「逢坂の関の清水」であれば「恋」や「羈旅」の歌であった。それが「堀河百首」で夏十五首の中に「泉」題が設けられ、「六月に岩もる清水結ばずはあふぎの風を忘ましやは〈藤原公実〉」などと詠まれるに及んで「夏」に涼を呼ぶものとなる。
(2)「堀河百首」はその後の歌人達に大きな影響を与えたが、特に挙例の「新古今集」の西行の歌は、謡曲にも採られるなど広く世に知られ、「奥の細道」でも芭蕉はその残る柳に立ち寄っている。
(3)俳諧の季語としては、「清水結ぶ」あるいは「清水せく」で「夏」としており、「清水」は「雑」とされた。しかし、江戸中期の「俳諧・滑稽雑談‐六月」では「清水」だけでも「夏」としている。

きよ‐みず ‥みづ【清水】
