Horse-borrowing Revolt

Japanese:
Horse-borrowing Revolt
An ikki was an uprising by horse hirers, who were major land transport businesses in the late Middle Ages. It originally emerged as part of a petition by Enryaku-ji Temple, but later drew attention as a leading peasant uprising. A famous incident occurred in 1418 when several thousand horse hirers from Otsu, Omi Province (present-day Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture) attacked Gion Shrine in Kyoto (present-day Yasaka Shrine). Up until this time, it was common for horse hirers from Otsu and Sakamoto in Omi Province (present-day Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture) to rise up in revolts following the petitions of Enryaku-ji Temple, but after the Shocho peasant uprising in 1428, peasant uprisings demanding amnesty became frequent, and horse hirers from various regions became active in these uprisings. →Ikki / Tokusei Ikki
