Mycenaean Greek

...Classical Greece, the medieval Byzantine Empire, and the Christian Church and their cultures had an immeasurable influence on the formation of the Western world, but their linguistic legacy is also enormous.
[Prehistoric times]
Its history begins with documents written in Linear B, known as Mycenaean Greek. These documents, inscribed on clay tablets, burned by fire, and buried in dry soil until they were discovered in modern times, were unearthed at the Palace of Knossos on Crete and in various parts of the Peloponnese, but for a long time no one involved suspected that the language was indigenous and therefore Greek.
