A former town in Sakai County in northern Fukui Prefecture. Located in the northern part of the Fukui Plain, it is the center of rice production. Livestock farming, wheat, and soybean cultivation are also thriving. After Maruoka Station on the Hokuriku Main Line was established, an urban area was created in front of the station. In March 2006, it merged with Mikuni Town, Maruoka Town, and Harue Town in Sakai County to become a city, Sakai City. 31.70 km2 . Population: 13,308 (2003).
