Jisso-in Temple

Jisso-in Temple

An independent temple located in Iwakura Agura-cho, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City. It was originally the head temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism. Its mountain name is Iwakurayama. It is also known as Iwakura Monzeki and Jisso-in Monzeki. Its principal image is Acala. It is the 16th of the 36 Acalas sacred sites in the Kinki region. It was founded in Murasakino in 1229 (Kanki 1) by Sojo Seiki, the son of Takatsukasa Kanemoto, and later moved to Ogawa on Imadegawa-dori (Jisso-in-cho, Kamigyo Ward) before being moved to the grounds of Daiun-ji Temple (current location) in 1411 (Oei 18) during the reign of the 12th Sojo Giun (younger brother of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu). Many of the temple's members were members of the imperial family, regent families, and military families, and the current main hall and four-legged gate were relocated from the former palace of Shoshumon-in, the Empress of Emperor Higashiyama, during the reign of the 20th emperor, Gishu, in 1720 (Kyoho 5). In addition to the principal image from the Kamakura period, temple treasures include Emperor Goyozei's handwritten calligraphy in ink on paper in kana (a national important cultural property), sliding door paintings by the Kano school, and ancient documents. The temple grounds are home to two famous gardens: the strolling garden and the garden of one Buddha and eight priests.
