...The custom of calling this a génépro comes from the German word Generalprobe. In French it is called répétition générale, and in the UK and the US it is roughly equivalent to the dress rehearsal. This system was introduced to Japan after the opening of the Imperial Theater in 1911 (Meiji 44), that is, after the modern era when the country was strongly influenced by Western theater, and it has been particularly important in the new theater world.
