Mononobe

Japanese:
Mononobe

The former name of a village (Mononobe Village) in Kami District, eastern Kochi Prefecture. Currently, the area occupies the eastern part of Kami City. It borders Tokushima Prefecture. The former Mononobe Village was established in 1956 (Showa 31) when the villages of Makiyama and Kaminiro merged. In 2006 (Heisei 18), it merged with the towns of Tosayamada and Kahoku to become Kami City. National Route 195 runs through the area. The area is located in the Makiyama River and Kaminiro River basin, upstream of the Monobe River. It is not blessed with flat land, and slash-and-burn agriculture on the slopes and raising draft cattle were popular in the past. Forestry is the main industry, and about 90% of the land is forested, and in addition to cedar and cypress timber, it is also a producer of paper mulberry and mitsumata. Yuzu cultivation is also popular. The central town of Oodochi is located at the confluence of the Makiyama River and the Kami-Nira River, and Nagase Dam is located nearby. Mountains such as Sanrei (1,894 meters) and Shiragayama in the north, and valleys such as Beppu and Nishikuma are part of Tsurugisan Quasi-National Park and Okumonobe Prefectural Natural Park. The bamboo grass and azalea colonies at Sanrei and Tenguzuka are national natural monuments. There is Befukyo Hot Spring. "Tosa Kagura" is a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
