Parks were established under the Natural Parks Law (enacted in 1957), which stipulates that "parks are designated by dividing certain areas for the purpose of protecting areas of outstanding natural scenery, promoting their use, and contributing to the health, physical education, and education of the people." As of June 2007, there are 28 national parks (2.07 million hectares) such as Akan, Nikko, and Aso-Kuju, 55 quasi-national parks (1.34 million hectares) such as Suigo Tsukuba, Akiyoshidai, and Nichinan Coast, and 309 prefectural natural parks (1.96 million hectares) such as Takao Jinba and Akigawa Hills.
