Parks were established under the Natural Parks Law (enacted in 1957), which stipulates that "parks are designated by dividing certain areas for the purpose of protecting areas of outstanding natural scenery, promoting their use, and contributing to the health, physical education, and education of the people." As of June 2007, there are 28 national parks (2.07 million hectares) such as Akan, Nikko, and Aso-Kuju, 55 quasi-national parks (1.34 million hectares) such as Suigo Tsukuba, Akiyoshidai, and Nichinan Coast, and 309 prefectural natural parks (1.96 million hectares) such as Takao Jinba and Akigawa Hills. The total area is 5.37 million hectares, accounting for 14.21% of the country's land area.

自然公園法(1957年制定)により定められた公園で,〈すぐれた自然の風景地を保護するとともに,その利用の増進をはかり,国民の保健,体育および教化に資することを目的として,一定の区域を画して指定される公園〉と同法に規定されている。2007年6月現在,阿寒,日光,阿蘇くじゅう等の国立公園28ヵ所(207万ha),水郷筑波,秋吉台,日南海岸等の国定公園55ヵ所(134万ha),高尾陣馬,秋川丘陵等の都道府県立自然公園309ヵ所(196万ha)がある。総面積は537万haで国土面積の14.21%を占めている。
