...The still, a product of Hellenistic culture, consisted of a flask for heating the liquor and a beaked cap (ambix) that was placed over the top to cool the alcoholic vapor, and was called al-anbīq by the Arabs who used it as an alchemy tool. The distillers used to make malt whiskey and cognac today are almost the same type and are called alembics, and the one used to make Japanese shochu was also called lambiki. In the 8th century, alchemy was transferred to Spain with the Islamic army, and was spread to various parts of Europe from its center, Córdoba.

From the end of the 4th century BC, the Hellenistic culture that flourished around Alexandria developed alchemy, and the copper still, the alembic, was used as a tool for this.
