A tribe from the time of Buddha in India, the Koliya tribe belonged to the Kshatriya class. The state was organized as a tribal republic. It was adjacent to the Shakya tribe across the Rohini River, and the two tribes were linked by marriage (Buddha's mother, Maya, is said to have been from this tribe). There is a famous story about Buddha mediating a dispute between the two tribes over water use on the Rohini River. After Buddha's death, the Koliya tribe is said to have obtained some of the Buddha's bones and built a tower. [Yamazaki Genichi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
