...His later thoughts on the nature of poetry and its relationship to drama and music provide profound insights. Inspired by the demands of theater, both primitive and synthetic, such as Wagner's mythological music dramas, Aeschylus' tragedies (he later translated the Oreste Trilogy himself), Shakespeare and Elizabethan drama, and Annam's plays at the Paris World's Fair in 1889, he produced his early plays, beginning with "The Golden Head" (first published in 1889 and 1890, revised in 1894), in his own free verse style (Claudel-style long and short verse (berce)).
