Uri (state)

The fourth canton (state) of the Swiss Confederation. Located in the geographical and historical center of Switzerland. Area: 1,076 km2, population: 36,000 (1996). Capital: Altdorf. Located at the northern entrance to the Sankt Gotthardt pass in the central Alps, Uri is on a key transportation route between southern Germany and northern Italy. スイス連邦を構成する4番目のカントン(州)。地理的･歴史的にスイスの中核に位置する。面積1076km2，人口3万6000(1996)。州都アルトドルフAltdorf。アルプス中央のザンクト･ゴットハルトSankt Gotthardt(サン･ゴタールSaint Gothard)峠の北側登口にあって，南ドイツと北イタリアを結ぶ交通の要路上にある。ウーリの歴史はこのアルプス越えの重要峠と不可分の関係をもつ。
