Uri (state)
The fourth canton (state) of the Swiss Confederation. Located in the geographical and historical center of Switzerland. Area: 1,076 km2, population: 36,000 (1996). Capital: Altdorf. Located at the northern entrance to the Sankt Gotthardt pass in the central Alps, Uri is on a key transportation route between southern Germany and northern Italy. The history of Uri is inseparably linked to this important pass over the Alps.
