Most holy place

According to the Law Books of the Old Testament, the innermost sacred room of the Tabernacle, a portable sanctuary during the Israelites' wandering in the wilderness, was where God was present. It was separated by a curtain and was a place where the high priest could enter once a year on the Day of Atonement. The innermost Holy of Holies in the Temple of Jerusalem built by Solomon was square, and a pair of cherubim and the Ark of the Covenant were placed there. Early Christians understood the tearing of the curtain of the Most Holy of Holies at the death of Jesus (Matthew 27:51) as a symbol of his atoning death.

旧約聖書の律法書によれば，イスラエル人の荒野放浪時代の移動聖所としての幕屋(タバナクル)の一番奥の，神が臨在する神聖な部屋で，垂幕で仕切られ，年1回贖罪日に大祭司が入りうるとされた場所。ソロモンが建立したエルサレムの神殿の最奥部の至聖所は正方形で，1対のケルビムと〈契約の箱〉が安置された。原始キリスト教団は，イエスの死に際して神殿の至聖所の垂幕が裂けたこと(《マタイによる福音書》27：51)を贖罪死の象徴と理解した。
