《Red Windmill》

...One of the directors of the postwar "Red Scare" generation (Georges Sadoul called him "Hollywood's Lost Generation"). After his film "The Red Badge of the Brave" (1951), which was seen as a protest against the "Red Scare," was cut to shreds by the producer, he continued to pursue his dilettantism as a skilled director, making a variety of films, including a biopic of painter Lautrec ("The Red Mill" 1952), a western ("The Unforgiven" 1960, "Roy Bean" 1972), a historical spectacle ("The Creation" 1965), a spy movie ("The Kremlin Letter" 1970, "The Macintosh Man" 1972), and a musical ("Annie" 1982). For this reason, while he was Hollywood's most commercial director, he was considered Hollywood's "unbranded cow" (maverick), and his most famous works are often counted among them The Misfits (1961), the last film to feature Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable, and the boxing film Fat City (1971).

…戦後の〈赤狩り〉の世代(ジョルジュ･サドゥールは〈ハリウッドの失われた世代〉と呼んだ)の監督の一人。〈赤狩り〉への抵抗とみなされた《勇者の赤いバッヂ》(1951)がプロデューサーの手でずたずたにカットされたあと，画家ロートレックの伝記映画(《赤い風車》1952)，西部劇(《許されざる者》1960，《ロイビーン》1972)，スペクタクル史劇(《天地創造》1965)，スパイ映画(《クレムリン･レター》1970，《マッキントッシュの男》1972)，ミュージカル(《アニー》1982)等々，何でもこなす職人監督としてそのディレッタンティズムをつらぬく。そのため，ハリウッドのもっとも商業的な監督でありながら，ハリウッドの〈烙印（らくいん）のない牛〉(マーベリック)とみなされ，マリリン･モンローとクラーク･ゲーブルの遺作になった《荒馬と女》(1961)やボクシングを描いた《ファット･シティ》(1971)がその代表作に数えられることが多い。…
