Arai Pass - Arai Pass

Japanese:
Arai Pass - Arai Pass
A checkpoint located at the eastern end of Araijuku, Totomi Province (present-day Arai-machi, Kosai City, Shizuoka Prefecture) on the Tokaido. It is also called Imagire Seki. Initially, the shogunate dispatched a Hatamoto as the checkpoint magistrate, but from 1702, it was managed by the Yoshida Domain of Mikawa Province. During the Edo period, it was one of the largest checkpoints, with over 50 officials, including the magistrate, about 20 samurai and ashigaru, 10 police officers, and two women, and was equipped with 25 bows and 25 guns as regular weapons. Security was strict, and there were two checkpoints on the Hime-kaido road on the north shore of Lake Hamana, called Kega Seki (Hosoe-cho, Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture), and Kanasashi Seki (Inasa-cho, Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture) to the northeast, as well as several dozen villages around Lake Hamana, which were tasked with inspecting the checkpoints. It was abolished in 1869. The remains have been designated a national special historic site, and the Sekisho Historical Museum is located to the east.
