A form of Russian folk song. It is the newest form, having been established in the second half of the 19th century. In some regions, it is called chastaya or chastukh. It was first sung in rural areas, but after the emancipation of the serfs in 1861, it spread to urban factories that absorbed migrant peasants. The verse usually consists of four lines (of which the second and fourth lines usually rhyme) and is sung at a fairly fast tempo. It may be accompanied by an accordion or balalaika, and male and female dancers often step to the accompaniment of the singer, either separately or facing each other.
