The Black Kingdom flourished in the upper reaches of the Nile from the 10th century BC to the 4th century AD. It first flourished with its capital at Napata in the middle reaches of the Nile, but during the reign of King Piankhi, it conquered all of Egypt and established the 25th Dynasty, also known as the Ethiopian Dynasty. It later retreated after two Assyrian invasions, and moved its capital to Meroe in the 7th century BC. It prospered thanks to its iron-making technology and caravan trade, and the undeciphered Meroe script was used at the royal court here. It was destroyed in the 4th century by the Aksumite Kingdom, believed to be of Semitic origin.
