A post station in Sakata County, Omi Province. It is currently Maibara Town, Shiga Prefecture (now Maibara City). It was a key transportation point on the ancient Tosando, the medieval Tokaido, and the modern Nakasendo. In 1246, Minamoto no Yoritsune spent the night at Baba on his way back to Kyoto, and in 1280, Asukai Masaari stayed at Bamba no Yado. On May 9, 1333, Hojo Nakatoki, the Northern Tandai of Rokuhara, and his men, who had been attacked by Ashikaga Takauji and were heading to Kanto, were cut off from their retreat by Kyogoku Doyo (Sasaki Takauji), and more than 430 people, including lords and followers, committed suicide at Banba Rengeji Temple (Taiheiki). Death registers and gravestones remain. In 1479, the tipping fee between Ono and Banba was 70 mon, and between Banba and Samegai it was 100 mon. During the Edo period, Banba-juku was relocated northeast due to its connection with Maibara Port, and around 1843 the townscape of the post town was over 1 cho 10 ken from north to south, with 117 houses, a population of 808, one main inn, one waki-honin, six horse and man-horse relay wholesale offices, six wholesalers, elders, two village headmen, two sidemen, two account keepers, two horsemen, and two man-to-foot relayers, and there were 50 people and 50 horses running the inn, and 10 inns (Yadomura Daigaicho).
