〘Noun〙 ("shichi" is the Go-on pronunciation of "room") = anshitsu (hermitage room) ※Wamyo-sho, 10 volumes (around 934) 3 “Hermitage room Tang Yun Yun An (Uhanhan, commonly called Awunoshi) Kososha” [Etymology] (1) A Chinese word corresponding to the Japanese word “iori” (hermitage). Both words refer to a temporary house where monks and nuns live, but “iori” is also used to mean a temporary house in general. (2) Up until the Bunmeihon Setsuyoshu, it was written as “anshichi,” but by the end of the Muromachi period, many Setsuyoshu collections began to use the word “anjitsu,” and this was also the case in the early modern period. (3) Until the early modern period, the kana for "shi" was a voiced consonant, but since the Meiji period, it has been used interchangeably as anjitsu or anshitsu.
