〘Noun〙 ("shichi" is the Go-on pronunciation of "room") = anshitsu (hermitage room) ※Wamyo-sho, 10 volumes (around 934) 3 “Hermitage room Tang Yun Yun An (Uhanhan, commonly called Awunoshi) Kososha” [Etymology] (1) A Chinese word corresponding to the Japanese word “iori” (hermitage). Both words refer to a temporary house where monks and nuns live, but “iori” is also used to mean a temporary house in general.
(2) Up until the Bunmeihon Setsuyoshu, it was written as “anshichi,” but by the end of the Muromachi period, many Setsuyoshu collections began to use the word “anjitsu,” and this was also the case in the early modern period.
(3) Until the early modern period, the kana for "shi" was a voiced consonant, but since the Meiji period, it has been used interchangeably as anjitsu or anshitsu.

An-shitsu [Hermitage room]

A-zechi [Hermitage]

〘Noun〙 (A variation of "anjichi (hermitage room)") ① = anshitsu (hermitage room) ② In the early modern period, it was a term used to refer to ordinary temples in Nara. However, Kofuku-ji Temple was called "tera" (temple ). By extension, it means "terakoya" (temple school).

〘名〙 (「しち」は「室」の呉音) =あんしつ(庵室)※十巻本和名抄(934頃)三「庵室 唐韻云庵〈烏含反 俗云阿无之知〉小草舎也」[語誌](1)和語の「いおり(庵)」に対応する漢語で、ともに僧尼の住む仮屋をいうが、「いおり」は一般の仮屋の意味にも用いる。
(2)「文明本節用集」までは「アンシチ」と示されるが、室町末期に至ると諸節用集に多く「アンジツ」と示され、近世も同様である。
(3)「シ」の仮名は近世まで濁音であったが、明治以降はアンジツ、アンシツが併用される。

あん‐しつ【庵室】

〘名〙 (「あんじつ」とも) 木で造り屋根を草で葺(ふ)いた、小さな仮の家。僧侶や世捨て人の住居。転じて、主に尼僧の住まい。庵。いおり。あんじち。あんや。※今昔(1120頃か)一二「書写の山に移りて三間の奄室を造て住す。日夜に法花経を読誦(どくじゅ)するに」※浄瑠璃・当麻中将姫(1714頃)三「薄雲は只ひとり、あんじつにかけ入て」[語誌]→「あんじち(庵室)」の語誌

あ‐ぜち【庵室】

〘名〙 (「あんじち(庵室)」の変化した語)① =あんしつ(庵室)② 近世、奈良の一般寺院に対する呼称。ただし、興福寺は寺(てら)と称した。転じて、寺子屋。
