In 1817, he self-published his first collection of poems. This caught the attention of Keats' publisher John Taylor, who published Depictions of Country Life (1820). This was followed by The Village Minstrel and Other Pieces (1821), The Shepherd's Almanac (1827), and The Country Poet (1835).
