Hokubo [town] - Hokubo

Japanese: 北房[町] - ほくぼう

An old town in Jobo County, central Okayama Prefecture, occupying the upper reaches of the Bitchu River. The Chugoku Expressway passes through the town. The main settlement is Shimoazae. Rice, livestock, and fruit, vegetable, and tobacco cultivation are carried out. There is a limestone cave called Kanachiana. In March 2005, the town merged with the towns of Katsuyama, Ochiai, Yubara, Kuze, Mikawa, Kawakami, Yatsuka, and Nakawa in Maniwa County to become a city. Area 71.18 ^km2 . Population 6,514 (2003).

岡山県中部，備中(びっちゅう)川上流域を占める上房(じょうぼう)郡の旧町。中国自動車道が通じる。主集落は下呰部(しもあざえ)。米作，畜産，果樹・野菜・タバコ栽培を行う。鍾乳洞の鐘乳穴(かなちあな)がある。2005年３月真庭郡勝山町，落合町，湯原町，久世町，美甘村，川上村，八束村，中和村と合併し市制，真庭市となる。71.18km²。6514人（2003）。
