Alfred [the Great] - Alfred
King of England from the House of Wessex (reigned 871-899). He fought against the Danes who had invaded England at that time and secured southern England. He organized the military system, reformed the administration, compiled legal codes and chronicles, and worked to promote culture by translating Latin classics into English.
