1414‐86 Son of Frederick I, Margrave of Brandenburg in Germany. In 1464, he inherited the Principality of Krumbach-Bayreuth, and attempted to establish the Duchy of Franconia by taking control of Nuremberg, but failed. In 1470, he succeeded his brother Frederick II as Margrave and Elector of Brandenburg, and in 1473, the family law established the indivisibility of the margraviate and the eldest son's succession. As a commander of the imperial army, he played an important role in the imperial reforms under Emperor Frederick III.
