The immune system, which protects the body's health, works to defend the body against foreign substances (non-self) such as viruses and bacteria that invade the body from the outside, but as a rule it does not work against substances (self) that are already inside the body from birth.
However, there are cases where the immune system recognizes self as non-self and goes into action. This is called autoimmunity, and B lymphocytes react to this non-self-derived antigenic substance and produce various antibodies (autoantibodies), while T lymphocytes are stimulated by this antigen and begin to function. Cells that show antigenicity are then targeted by the activated T lymphocytes and attacked directly or via antibodies, which can destroy the cells and cause disease. This disease is called an autoimmune disease, and an autoimmune reaction that occurs in the liver is called an autoimmune liver disease.

からだの健康を守る免疫系は、外からからだのなかへ侵入してきたウイルスや細菌などの異物（非自己）に対してはたらき、からだを防御しますが、生まれながらからだのなかにある物（自己）に対しては働かないのが原則です。
　ところが、自己を非自己と認識して免疫系が働いてしまうことがあります。これを自己免疫と呼び、この非自己に由来する抗原物質に対しＢリンパ球が反応していろいろな抗体（自己抗体）をつくり出し、一方ではこの抗原に刺激されてＴリンパ球が作動しはじめます。そして、抗原性を示す細胞が活性化されたＴリンパ球の標的として直接あるいは抗体を介して攻撃を受け、細胞が破壊されて病気がおこってくることがあります。この病気を自己免疫疾患といい、肝臓を場として自己免疫反応がおこった病気が自己免疫性肝疾患です。
