1690‐1764 Mathematician born in Königsberg, Prussia (now Kaliningrad, part of the Russian Federation). The son of a prominent politician, he studied mathematics and medicine at the University of Königsberg. At the age of 20, he traveled around Europe and became friends with G.W.F. Leibniz and the Bernoulli family. He was appointed to the Imperial Russian Academy for about two years around 1726, and in January 1728, he moved to Moscow and became a tutor to Peter II and Princess Anna, but returned to the Imperial Russian Academy in 1732.
