(1) A practical unit of mass for gemstones. Its symbol is ct or car. 1 ct = 0.2 g. In the past, plant seeds were often used as a standard for mass. The word carat comes from the Greek word keration (the horn-shaped fruit of the carob plant). Carat was interpreted in various ways depending on the time and place, but in 1877 it was standardized to 1 ct = 0.205 g (called an English carat), and in 1907 it was unified to 1 ct = 0.2 g (called a metric carat). (2) A unit of mass for the amount of pure gold in a gold alloy. Its symbol is K, kt, or gold. Pure gold is 24K, so for example, 18K is a gold alloy with a gold content of 18/24 by mass.
