French art historian and art critic. Born in Chartres, he was educated in a minor aristocratic family before moving to Paris to grow up in the leading literary environment of the time. He served as secretary to the French ambassador in Rome from 1647 to 1649, where he met the painter Poussin and others. After returning to France in 1666, he became the king's historiographer, providing historical records of royal buildings and royal collections. His 10-volume work, Discourses on the Lives and Works of the Greatest Painters of All Time, written between 1666 and 1688, represents the basic philosophy of the French Academy and exerted a profound influence for the next 200 years.
